Gather Your Ingredients: Essential Supplies for Your Zesty Fruit Cake
Crafting the perfect Orange Holiday Fruit Cake begins with assembling the right ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in achieving the desired texture, moisture, and unforgettable flavor profile. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need to create this festive masterpiece:
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour: Plus an additional 3 tablespoons specifically for dusting the dried fruits. Sifting your flour can also help create a lighter cake.
- 5 large eggs: Ensure these are at room temperature. Room temperature eggs emulsify better with butter and sugar, leading to a smoother batter and a more even, tender cake crumb.
- 1.5 cups granulated sugar: Provides sweetness and helps create a tender texture when creamed with butter.
- 1 cup unsalted butter: Softened to room temperature. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the overall salt content of your cake. Softened butter creams beautifully, incorporating air for a light texture.
- 1 tablespoon baking powder: This leavening agent is essential for giving the cake its rise and airy structure.
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract: Opt for a high-quality pure vanilla extract, not artificial essence. Good vanilla deepens and rounds out the overall flavor of the cake.
- ¾ cup Florida’s Natural No Pulp Orange Juice: The star ingredient that infuses the cake with its signature fresh, zesty flavor and incredible moisture.
- ¼ cup whole milk yogurt: Adds extra moisture and a slight tang, contributing to the cake’s tender and moist crumb.
- ½ cup golden raisins: Sweet and chewy, these add a lovely texture and traditional fruitcake flavor.
- 1 cup fruit cake dried fruit mix: A convenient blend of various dried fruits often found in stores. If unavailable, see our tips below for making your own mix.
- ¾ cup glace green cherries: These vibrant, candied cherries add a pop of color and a sweet, chewy element. Cut them in half for better distribution.
- ¾ cup glace red cherries: Similar to the green, these offer another festive burst of color and sweetness. Also cut in half.
- ½ teaspoon orange extract (optional): For those who desire an even bolder, more pronounced orange flavor, this extract can intensify the citrus notes.

Crafting Your Masterpiece: Step-by-Step Instructions for Your Orange Holiday Fruit Cake
Follow these detailed steps to create a deliciously moist and flavorful Orange Holiday Fruit Cake that will impress everyone this season:
- Prepare the Oven and Dry Ingredients: Begin by preheating your oven to 325°F (160°C). In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the 2 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour and the baking powder until thoroughly combined. This ensures even distribution of the leavening agent. Set this dry mixture aside.
- Coat the Dried Fruits: In a separate bowl, place all your dried fruits: the golden raisins, the fruit cake dried fruit mix, the glace green cherries (cut in half), and the glace red cherries (cut in half). Sprinkle these generously with the extra 3 tablespoons of flour (this is separate from the flour for the batter). Toss thoroughly until all the fruits are well coated. This step is absolutely crucial – it prevents the fruits from sinking to the bottom of your cake pan during baking, ensuring an even distribution throughout the cake. Set aside.

- Cream Butter and Sugar: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or using a hand mixer), combine the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar. Beat on medium-high speed for about 3-5 minutes, or until the mixture becomes wonderfully light, fluffy, and visibly paler, almost off-white in color. This creaming process incorporates air, which is vital for a tender cake.

- Incorporate the Wet Ingredients: Reduce the mixer speed to low. Add the room temperature eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to fully incorporate into the butter-sugar mixture before adding the next. Once all eggs are added, increase the speed to medium and whisk for another 2-3 minutes until the mixture appears light, fluffy, and almost doubles in size. Then, lower the speed again and add in the whole milk yogurt and vanilla extract. If you’re using orange extract for an extra citrus boost, add it at this stage as well.

- Add in the Dry Ingredients and Orange Juice: With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with small additions of Florida’s Natural orange juice. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Continue mixing on low speed for approximately 2 minutes, or until the ingredients are just combined and no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix at this stage. The resulting cake batter should be thick and luscious in consistency.
- Fold in the Dried Fruits: Gently remove the bowl from the stand mixer. Using a spatula, carefully fold about three-quarters of the floured dried fruits into the cake mixture. It’s important to fold them in by hand and avoid using the mixer at this point, as overmixing can develop the gluten in the flour too much and compromise the tender texture of the cake.

- Prepare the Pan and Add Batter: Take a non-stick Bundt cake pan and generously spray it with a non-stick baking spray. Even if your pan claims to be non-stick, this extra step is crucial for easy release and prevents any sticking, especially with a fruit-heavy cake. Carefully pour the thick cake batter into the prepared Bundt pan, distributing it evenly. Scatter the remaining one-quarter of the floured dried fruits over the top of the batter in the pan.

- Bake the Fruit Cake: Place the Bundt pan on the middle rack of your preheated 325°F (160°C) oven. Bake for approximately 1 hour. To check for doneness, insert a thin wooden skewer or a toothpick into the deepest part of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready. If it has wet batter clinging to it, continue baking for a few more minutes and test again.
- Cool and Serve: Once baked, carefully remove the fruit cake from the oven. Immediately cover the pan with a clean kitchen towel. This helps trap steam, keeping the cake incredibly moist as it cools. Allow the cake to cool completely at room temperature in the pan before attempting to invert it onto a serving plate. Cutting and serving the cake when it’s fully cooled will give you the cleanest slices and best texture.

Expert Tips & Notes for the Perfect Orange Holiday Fruit Cake
Achieving a truly exceptional Orange Holiday Fruit Cake is within reach with these helpful tips and insights:
- The Flour Coating is Non-Negotiable: This is arguably the most critical step to prevent disappointment. You must generously coat your dried fruits with flour before adding them to the batter. Without this coating, the heavy fruits will inevitably sink to the bottom of your Bundt pan, resulting in an uneven cake. The flour creates a barrier, allowing the fruits to suspend beautifully throughout the cake.
- DIY Fruit Mix for Customization: If you’re having trouble finding a pre-made fruit cake dried fruit mix, or simply prefer to customize your flavors, you can easily create your own! Purchase individual bags of your favorite dried fruits such as green cherries, red cherries, candied pineapple, apricots, kiwi, or papaya. Chop them into small, bite-sized pieces and combine them. This allows for endless variations and ensures you only include fruits you love.
- Always Use Non-Stick Baking Spray: Even if your Bundt pan is advertised as non-stick, always use a high-quality non-stick baking spray (specifically designed for baking, which often includes flour) and apply it generously. Fruit cakes, especially those with candied fruits, have a tendency to stick to pans. A good spray ensures your beautiful cake releases cleanly and intact.
- Boost the Orange Flavor: For those who truly adore a bold citrus punch, consider adding an extra ½ teaspoon of orange extract to the wet ingredients. Alternatively, or in addition, you can zest one large orange and incorporate the zest into the batter. Orange zest contains concentrated oils that provide a powerful, aromatic burst of fresh orange flavor.
- Introduce a Nutty Crunch: If you enjoy nuts in your fruit cake, feel free to add about ½ to 1 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the batter. Just like with the dried fruits, it’s essential to break them up into smaller pieces and then coat them lightly with flour before folding them into the cake batter. This will also help prevent them from sinking and ensure they are evenly distributed.

Storing Your Orange Holiday Fruit Cake for Lasting Freshness
One of the many wonderful qualities of fruit cake is its excellent keeping ability. Proper storage ensures your Orange Holiday Fruit Cake remains moist and delicious for an extended period, allowing you to savor it throughout the holiday season and beyond. Here’s how to store it effectively:
- At Room Temperature: For short-term storage, ensure your orange fruit cake is completely cooled. Then, wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Place the wrapped cake in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out. When stored properly in a cool, dry room, this fruitcake can remain fresh for up to 10 days. However, for the absolute best texture and flavor, we recommend enjoying it within the first week.
- In the Refrigerator: To extend its freshness even further, you can store your fruit cake in the refrigerator. After cooling completely, wrap it securely in several layers of plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil. This double protection is key to preventing moisture loss and absorbing any refrigerator odors. When properly refrigerated, your fruit cake will stay fresh and moist for up to 2 weeks. Again, it’s so delicious, we doubt it will last that long!
- In the Freezer: Fruit cake freezes beautifully, making it an ideal make-ahead holiday treat. To freeze, ensure the cake is completely cool. Wrap it very tightly in multiple layers of plastic wrap, then an additional layer of aluminum foil, or place it in a heavy-duty freezer bag. This prevents freezer burn. Stored this way, your fruitcake can last for several months – even up to a year! While it technically can last longer, we suggest enjoying it before the one-year mark for optimal taste and texture. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature before serving.

Delightful Ways to Serve Your Orange Holiday Fruit Cake
Your freshly baked Orange Holiday Fruit Cake is delicious on its own, but there are many ways to enhance its enjoyment and make it an even more memorable part of your holiday spread:
- Simply Plain: Sometimes, the simplest approach is the best. Enjoy a slice as is, allowing the vibrant orange flavor and the tender, moist crumb to shine on its own. It pairs wonderfully with a warm cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of milk.
- With a Glaze: For an extra touch of sweetness and visual appeal, consider a simple orange glaze. Whisk together powdered sugar with a few tablespoons of Florida’s Natural orange juice until smooth. Drizzle it over the cooled cake for a beautiful finish and an intensified orange flavor.
- Creamy Accompaniments: A dollop of freshly whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream provides a delightful contrast to the fruit cake’s richness. The cool creaminess complements the warm spices and citrus notes perfectly.
- Custard or Crème Anglaise: For a more sophisticated presentation, serve slices of fruit cake with a light pour of warm vanilla custard or crème anglaise. This adds a luxurious texture and rich flavor.
- Toasted: Believe it or not, lightly toasting a slice of fruit cake can bring out its flavors and give it a pleasant crispness on the outside while keeping the inside moist. A quick toast in a toaster oven or under a broiler can be a delightful twist.

- ¾ cup glace green cherries, cut in half
- ¾ cup glace red cherries, cut in half
- ½ tsp. orange extract (optional, if you want a bold orange flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 F (160°C).
- In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients (2 ¾ cups flour and baking powder) together. Set aside.
- In another bowl, coat the dried fruits (golden raisins, fruit cake dried fruit mix, glace green cherries, glace red cherries) very well with 3 tbsps. of flour (separate from the 2 ¾ cups for the batter). Set aside. This step is a MUST or the fruits will sink to the bottom of the cake pan.
- In a stand mixer bowl, whisk together the softened butter and sugar until the mixture becomes fluffy and almost off-white in color, about 3-5 minutes.
- Reduce the speed and gradually add in the eggs one at a time. Boost the speed to medium and whisk until the mixture fluffs up and almost doubles in size, about 2-3 minutes.
- Lower the speed and add in the yogurt and vanilla extract. If you are using orange extract, add it in now as well.
- On low speed, add in the dry ingredients gradually, alternating with the orange juice. Continue mixing the mixture on low speed for about 2 minutes. The cake batter should be thick in consistency.
- Fold ¾ of the floured dried fruits into the cake mixture with a spatula. Do not overmix or use the mixing stand for this step.
- Spray a non-stick Bundt cake pan generously with non-stick baking spray and pour in the batter. Top with the remainder of the dried fruits.
- Bake in the preheated 325 F (160°C) oven for 1 hour on the middle rack. Insert a thin wooden skewer into the deepest part of the cake and make sure it comes out clean before removing from the oven.
- Remove from the oven and cover with a kitchen towel until it cools down completely at room temperature. Cut and serve when cool.
Notes
- You must coat the dried fruits with flour or they will sink to the bottom of your Bundt pan.
- If you can’t find the fruit cake fruit mix, you can buy different types of dried fruits like green cherries, red cherries, pineapple, apricot, kiwi, papaya and cut them up into small pieces and use that instead to make your own homemade fruit mix.
- Must use a non-stick “baking spray” before pouring into the pan even if the pan is non-stick as your fruit cake will stick.
- If you want a bolder orange flavor, add ½ teaspoon of orange extract or some orange zest into the mixture.
- You can also add nuts like pecan or walnut to your fruit cake. If you do, make sure you break them up a little and coat with flour before adding into the cake batter.
