What Makes Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups Special?
The allure of the Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cup lies in its harmonious blend of distinct textures and rich flavors. It’s a dessert that engages all the senses, from the moment you see its beautifully layered structure to the final bite that combines crispy, creamy, and fresh elements. Here’s a breakdown of the components that make this dessert truly exceptional:
- The Crispy Kataifi Base: Unlike traditional crusts, kataifi (shredded phyllo dough) provides an incredibly light, airy, and golden crunch that is both unique and addictive. When toasted in butter and mixed with pistachio cream and tahini, it forms a sweet, nutty, and highly textural layer that is the backbone of the dessert.
- Luxurious Pistachio Cream: Whether homemade or store-bought, high-quality pistachio cream is the star. Its distinctive nutty flavor and vibrant green hue add an authentic Middle Eastern touch, pairing beautifully with chocolate and berries.
- Rich Chocolate Coating: A generous layer of premium milk or dark chocolate encases the crispy pistachio-kataifi mixture, creating a satisfying snap with every spoonful. The quality of chocolate is paramount here, as it forms a significant part of the dessert’s flavor profile.
- Fresh, Sweet Strawberries: The inclusion of fresh strawberries introduces a burst of natural sweetness and a slight tartness that cuts through the richness of the chocolate and pistachio. Their juicy texture provides a refreshing contrast to the crispy and creamy layers.
- No-Bake Simplicity: Despite its gourmet appearance, this dessert is surprisingly easy to assemble and requires no baking, making it accessible to home cooks of all skill levels and perfect for any occasion.
Essential Ingredients for Your Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups
To embark on this delightful culinary journey, gathering high-quality ingredients is key. Each component plays a vital role in building the unique flavor and texture profile of these cups. Here’s what you’ll need, along with some tips for selecting the best ones:

- Milk or Dark Chocolate: The foundation of your chocolate layer. While I personally adore using Callebaut Belgian Chocolate for its superior quality and smooth melt, don’t hesitate to use another high-quality, readily available chocolate brand that fits your budget. The key is to choose a chocolate you genuinely enjoy eating, as its flavor will be prominent. Opt for baking chocolate bars or good quality chocolate chips that melt smoothly.
- Kataifi Dough (Shredded Phyllo Dough): This delicate, hair-like pastry is the secret to the unique crunch. You can typically find shredded phyllo dough in the frozen section of most Middle Eastern or international grocery stores. Thaw it completely before use.
- Unsalted Butter: Essential for toasting the kataifi dough to a beautiful golden brown and imparting a rich, nutty flavor. Unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the dessert.
- Tahini Paste: Pureed sesame seeds. A small amount of tahini adds a wonderful depth and slightly savory, earthy note that balances the sweetness of the other ingredients, a common characteristic in Middle Eastern sweets. Ensure it’s well-stirred before measuring.
- Pistachio Cream: The creamy, nutty heart of the dessert. While good quality store-bought pistachio cream is convenient, making your own Homemade Pistachio Cream offers a cleaner flavor profile, free from additives and preservatives, and allows you to adjust the sweetness to your preference.
- Fresh Strawberries: The vibrant, juicy counterpoint. Select sweet, ripe, and firm strawberries. Their natural sweetness and slight tartness provide a refreshing contrast to the rich chocolate and pistachio layers.
- Heavy Cream: Used to create a luxurious chocolate ganache, ensuring your chocolate layer remains smooth and luscious even when chilled. Look for heavy cream or whipping cream with at least 36% fat content for the best results.
- Chopped Pistachios (for garnishing): Optional, but highly recommended for an extra pop of color, texture, and nutty flavor on top.
How to Make Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating these stunning dessert cups is a straightforward process that comes together quickly. Follow these steps to assemble your very own Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups:

Recipe Tips for Achieving Perfection
Follow these expert tips to ensure your Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups turn out perfectly every time:
- Choose Peak Season Strawberries: The flavor of your dessert heavily relies on the quality of your fruit. Opt for strawberries that are in season, deeply red, fragrant, and sweet. Avoid pale or bruised berries, as they will detract from the overall taste experience.
- Homemade Pistachio Cream for Superior Flavor: While store-bought pistachio cream is convenient, consider making your own. Homemade versions often have a purer, more intense pistachio flavor and allow you to control the sugar content. Many commercial brands contain excessive additives, preservatives, and artificial colorings that can mask the true taste of pistachios.
- Ganache Over Plain Melted Chocolate: If you plan to prepare these cups in advance or store leftovers, always opt for chocolate ganache over simply melted chocolate. Melted chocolate, when chilled, becomes very hard and difficult to eat. Ganache, on the other hand, sets into a luxurious, fudgy, yet spoonable consistency in the refrigerator, maintaining its delightful texture.
- Strategic Storage for Optimal Freshness: To preserve the crunch of the kataifi and the freshness of the strawberries, it’s best to store the components separately if you’re not assembling and serving immediately. Keep the toasted kataifi mixture in an airtight container at room temperature, the ganache refrigerated, and the strawberries washed and prepped, but stored separately in the fridge. Assemble the cups just before serving for the freshest and most satisfying experience.
- Adjusting Sweetness: Taste your pistachio cream and chocolate. If you prefer a less sweet dessert, choose dark chocolate with a higher cocoa percentage. If using homemade pistachio cream, you can also reduce the sugar content.
- Presentation Matters: Use clear glass cups or jars to showcase the beautiful layers. A sprinkle of chopped pistachios or a tiny mint leaf on top can add an elegant finishing touch.
Common Questions About Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups
Yes, you can prepare this dessert ahead of time, but with a few considerations. For the best texture, it’s ideal to assemble the cups closer to serving. If assembled, they can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Be aware that the texture of strawberries can soften slightly after being combined with other ingredients and stored, and the kataifi might lose some of its crispness over time. For optimal crunch, store components separately and assemble just before serving.
While technically possible, fresh strawberries work best for this recipe. Frozen strawberries release a lot of water when thawed, which can make the dessert watery and affect the texture of the other layers, particularly the crispy kataifi. If you must use frozen, thaw them completely and drain them very well before dicing to minimize excess moisture.
Store any leftover Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups in an airtight container in the fridge. If using individual cups, you can cover each one tightly with plastic wrap (saran wrap) to prevent them from drying out and absorbing other odors from the refrigerator. Consume within 2 days for the best quality.
Kataifi dough is usually available in the frozen section of Middle Eastern, Greek, or international grocery stores. If it’s absolutely unavailable, you could experiment with a crushed shortbread cookie base or even toasted shredded coconut, though the unique texture of kataifi is truly irreplaceable for this specific dessert.
While pistachio cream is central to the “Dubai” inspired flavor, you could experiment with other nut creams like almond butter or cashew butter for a different twist. However, for the authentic taste profile, pistachios are highly recommended. You could also mix in other chopped nuts like almonds or walnuts with the kataifi for added texture.

Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cup
Mariam Ezzeddine
10 minutes

20 minutes
2 Cups
Ingredients
- 1½ cup shredded kataifi dough
- 2 tbsps unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp tahini paste
- 1 cup milk chocolate, or dark chocolate
- ¾ cup pistachio cream
- 1½ cup fresh strawberries
- Chopped pistachios, for garnishing
- ½ cup heavy cream
Instructions
-
In a pan over medium heat, melt some butter and toast the Kataifi dough until golden brown. Once golden, add in the tahini and pistachio cream. Mix until well combined.
-
Melt chocolate using a double boiler or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between. Once all the chocolate melts, add in the heavy cream and mix until ganache is smooth. If you prefer your ganache to be more fluid, add in 1 tbsp more heavy cream at a time to reach desired consistency.
-
Wash and cut up the strawberries. At this point, you should have everything ready for layering your strawberry cups.
-
Start layering the strawberry cups. Place each ingredient in layers and repeat the process until you fill the cups.
Notes
- Use sweet strawberries for better flavor.
- Make your pistachio cream at home for a cleaner version. Store-bought pistachio cream can have a lot of additives and preservatives.
- It’s best to make chocolate ganache instead of using just melted chocolate if you are not consuming right away. Plain melted chocolate will harden significantly in the fridge.
- I recommend storing all ingredients separately and assembling every time you’re ready to eat. This way, the ingredients stay fresh and crunchy.
