Essential Ingredients for Your Homemade Chips

Crafting these extraordinary potato chips requires a handful of simple, high-quality ingredients, each playing a crucial role in achieving the perfect flavor and texture:

  • Russet Potatoes: These starchy potatoes are the ideal choice for making crispy chips. Their high starch content and low moisture allow them to crisp up beautifully in the oven, creating that desirable light and airy texture. Ensure they are washed thoroughly before slicing.
  • Salt: A fundamental seasoning that enhances the natural flavor of the potatoes and balances the bold notes of the everything bagel seasoning. Use fine sea salt or kosher salt for even distribution.
  • Oil Spray: Olive oil spray is recommended for its light application and health benefits. It helps the seasoning adhere to the potato slices and promotes even browning and crisping without adding excessive oil.
  • Everything Bagel Seasoning: The star of the show! This flavorful blend is what gives these chips their signature taste. If you don’t have a pre-made blend, you can easily create your own with poppy seeds, toasted sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and a touch of flakey sea salt.

Crafting Your Crispy Everything Bagel Potato Chips: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making these gourmet chips at home is an enjoyable and rewarding process. Follow these simple steps to achieve perfectly crispy, flavor-packed results every time:

  • Prepare the Potatoes with Precision: Begin by thoroughly washing your russet potatoes, scrubbing away any dirt. The key to truly crispy chips is uniform thinness. Using a mandolin slicer is highly recommended to achieve consistent, paper-thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick). This ensures they cook evenly and crisp up beautifully. Once sliced, transfer the potato rounds to a large pot of boiling water. Boil them for precisely 2 minutes – no longer! This brief parboiling step is crucial as it removes excess starch, preventing the chips from becoming gummy and promoting maximum crispness during baking. After boiling, immediately strain the potato slices and rinse them under cold water to halt the cooking process. Drain them extremely well, as any residual moisture can hinder crisping.

  • Season and Bake to Golden Perfection: Line a large baking sheet (or two medium ones, if needed, to avoid overcrowding) with parchment paper. This prevents sticking and makes cleanup a breeze. Arrange the potato slices in a single layer, ensuring none are overlapping. Overlapping will steam the potatoes instead of crisping them. Gently pat the potato slices with paper towels to remove any last traces of moisture – this step is critical for ultimate crispiness. Lightly spray both sides of the potato slices with olive oil, then generously season with salt and your irresistible everything bagel seasoning. Distribute the seasoning evenly for a burst of flavor in every chip. Bake in a preheated oven (see recipe notes for temperature) until the chips are golden brown and wonderfully crisp. Keep a close eye on them, as baking times can vary slightly.

  • Cool and Serve: Once baked to your desired crispness, carefully remove the chips from the oven. Allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet or a wire rack. This cooling period is essential, as chips continue to crisp up as they cool. Serve them warm or at room temperature, perhaps with your favorite dip, and prepare to enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Expert Recipe Notes and Tips for Perfect Chips

Achieving perfectly crispy and flavorful everything bagel potato chips is simple when you keep these expert tips in mind:

  • Always Use a Preheated Oven: Starting with a hot oven is paramount for achieving crispiness. If the oven isn’t at the correct temperature, the potatoes will steam rather than bake, resulting in soggy chips. Allow your oven to fully preheat for at least 15-20 minutes before placing the baking sheet inside to ensure consistent heat.
  • Mandolin for Uniformity: While a sharp knife can work, a mandolin slicer is highly recommended for slicing the potatoes. It provides consistent, paper-thin slices (ideally 1/8 of an inch thick). Uniform thickness is key to even cooking and ensuring all your chips crisp up simultaneously. Just be sure to use the safety guard to protect your fingers!
  • Mind the Parboiling Time: Stick to the recommended 2-minute boiling time for the potato slices. This step is vital for removing excess starch, which contributes to gumminess, and jump-starts the cooking process. Overboiling will make the potatoes too soft and difficult to handle, causing them to fall apart rather than hold their shape and crisp. You want them tender but still firm enough to manipulate.
  • Watch Your Oven Closely: Every oven is different, and even the placement of your baking tray can affect cooking. Always use the middle rack for the most even heat distribution. Keep a vigilant eye on the chips, especially towards the end of the baking time, as they can go from perfectly golden to burnt very quickly. If some chips are browning faster, you can remove them early or rotate the tray.
  • Alternative to Parboiling: If you prefer to skip the parboiling step, you certainly can! Simply slice the potatoes very thinly, pat them exceptionally dry, and proceed to spray and season. Be aware that you will need to bake them for a longer duration, and they may require more frequent turning, until they reach your desired level of crispness. This method might yield a slightly different texture but can still be delicious.
  • Olive Oil Application: If you don’t have an olive oil spray, a kitchen brush is an excellent alternative. Lightly brush both sides of each potato slice with a small amount of olive oil. The goal is to coat them just enough for the seasoning to adhere and to aid in browning, not to drench them.
  • Parchment Paper is Your Friend: Always line your baking sheet with parchment paper. This prevents the chips from sticking to the pan, even if they’re coated in oil, and makes for effortless removal and cleanup. It also helps to promote even cooking by insulating the potatoes from direct contact with the hot metal.
  • Ensure Potatoes Are Dry: After draining the parboiled potatoes, it is absolutely crucial to pat away any excess water from the potato slices before applying oil and seasoning. Use a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and gently press down on the slices. Removing as much moisture as possible is the secret to achieving that desirable, shatteringly crisp texture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Homemade Everything Bagel Chips

What is everything bagel seasoning?

Everything bagel seasoning is a wonderfully versatile and incredibly addictive blend of common pantry ingredients that captures the essence of a classic “everything” bagel. Typically, it includes a harmonious mix of poppy seeds, toasted white sesame seeds, toasted black sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and a touch of flakey sea salt. The ratio is generally an even mix of all ingredients, with slightly less salt to ensure it enhances rather than overpowers. This savory, aromatic, and textural blend adds a unique depth of flavor to almost anything, from eggs and avocado toast to, of course, these fantastic potato chips.

How to cut thin and even chips?

Achieving uniformly thin potato slices is perhaps the most crucial step for perfectly crispy, evenly cooked chips. For this, I highly recommend investing in a mandolin slicer. A mandolin allows you to consistently cut potatoes (or any vegetable) to your desired thickness, ensuring every chip cooks at the same rate and achieves optimal crispness. When using a mandolin, always exercise extreme caution and use the safety guard to protect your fingers, as the blades are incredibly sharp. If a mandolin isn’t available, a very sharp chef’s knife can be used, but you’ll need a steady hand and patience to achieve consistently thin cuts. Aim for about 1/8 of an inch thickness for the best results.

What to serve with these Crispy Everything Bagel Potato Chips?

These oven-baked chips are incredibly versatile! They are fantastic on their own, especially when paired with a variety of dips like creamy ranch, spicy sriracha mayo, a classic French onion dip, or a vibrant homemade hummus. Crispy Everything Bagel Potato Chips

Crispy Everything Bagel Potato Chips are everything you’d want from a homemade potato chip! Baked to perfection and delicious!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 medium Russet potatoes, washed very well
  • 1/2 tsp. Salt
  • Olive oil spray
  • Everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Bring a medium pot of water to a rolling boil.
  • Wash and scrub the potatoes very well on the outside. Slice them thinly using a mandolin (recommended thickness of about 1/8 of an inch), or carefully cut them very thinly with a sharp knife if you don’t have a mandolin. Rinse the slices and set aside.
  • Carefully drop the potato slices into the boiling water. Set your timer for exactly 2 minutes. It is crucial NOT to boil them for any longer than this, as they will become too soft.
  • Immediately transfer the parboiled potato slices gently into a colander. Run cold water over them to quickly stop the cooking process and prevent them from steaming further. Turn off the water and allow all excess water to drain completely from the potatoes.
  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. If you’re making a big batch, use two medium-sized sheets to ensure the potatoes are not overcrowded, which is essential for crispiness.
  • Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on the parchment paper, making sure they do not overlap. Gently pat down the potatoes very carefully with some paper towel to remove any remaining moisture on their surface. This step is critical for achieving maximum crispiness.
  • Lightly spray both sides of the potato slices with olive oil spray. Then, season them generously with salt and everything bagel seasoning, adjusting to your taste preference. Ensure both sides are evenly coated for uniform flavor.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the potato slices turn golden brown and become wonderfully crispy. Baking times can vary depending on your oven and slice thickness, so keep a close watch. For even crispier results, you can use a non-stick wired rack placed over your parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Once baked to perfection, remove the chips from the oven. Allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving. Cooling helps them achieve their final crisp texture. Serve them with your favorite dip or sauce and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use a preheated oven for best results.
  • Preferably, use a mandolin to slice the potatoes for uniform thickness and even cooking.
  • Do not overboil the potato slices; stick to 2 minutes to keep them tender but not falling apart.
  • Oven temperatures can vary. Use the middle rack and watch the chips closely to prevent burning.
  • If you choose not to parboil the potatoes, bake them for a longer time until they reach your desired crispiness.
  • If olive oil spray is unavailable, use a kitchen brush to apply olive oil evenly on the potatoes.
  • Always line your baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and aid in cleanup.
  • Ensure you pat away all excess water from the potato slices before spraying with olive oil. This is key to achieving a truly crispy texture.
